... for district presidents and general secretaries of Pakistan Muslim League-N ... the sacrifices of the workers, who had rendered services for the party. ...
ISLAMABAD, June 16: Chief of the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) Nawaz Sharif has finally appointed new office-bearers in 104 districts of the country, Islamabad city and all the four provinces after a delay of over two months. According to PML-N secretary-general Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, the PML-N chief on Thursday appointed Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa, Syed Ghous Ali Shah as presidents of the Punjab and Sindh, respectively. Mr Sharif has also appointed Syed Zaeem Qadri and former MNA Makhdoom Shahnawaz as general secretaries of the Punjab and Sindh, respectively.
As Syed Ghous Ali Shah is living in London in self-exile, Nawaz Sharif has made former governor Syed Mamnoon Hussain as acting president of the party’s Sindh chapter.
Earlier, Mr Sharif had named former chief minister Pir Sabir Shah and PML-N parliamentary leader in the NWFP Assembly Anwar Kamal Marwat as president and the general secretary, respectively, of the party in the NWFP.
In Balochistan, former federal minister Sardar Yaqoob Khan Nasir and Ayaz Khan Swati have been appointed as the president and general secretary, respectively.
The PML-N chief has approved the nomination of Dr Tariq Chaudhry as president and Malik Shujaur Rehman as the general secretary of the party’s Islamabad chapter.
It may be mentioned that PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif on December 20 last year dissolved the party’s Central Working Committee (CWC) and all the provincial and district bodies and announced that the party would be reorganized within 90 days to get best possible results in the next general elections.
Later, on February 3, Mr Sharif approved the party’s organizational committees in all the four provinces and directed them to complete the task of finalizing the party’s reorganisations within 45 days. However, the organizational committees failed to complete the task within the given timeframe due to rift in the party at local level at some places.
Giving justification for the delay, Mr Jhagra and party’s information secretary Siddiqul Farooque had stated that it was the desire of Nawaz Sharif to announce the names of office- bearers in all the provinces and districts in one go. Mr Farooque had also stated that the delay in the reorganization process was due to some “local problems and exigencies like deaths and marriages etc.”
Sources told Dawn that the delay was because of the fact that Nawaz Sharif had been facing great difficulties in finalizing the names of the office-bearers due to strong groupings in the party. They said that Mr Sharif was under tremendous pressure as he did not want to annoy any of the group at a time when the party was preparing for the local government elections and launching a movement against the government.
Mr Sharif announced the party’s new office-bearers after getting reports that there had been resentment among the party workers and leaders due to the delay and that some of the leaders were planning to personally meet Mr Sharif in Jeddah after the budget session of the National Assembly in this regard.
All the new office-bearers have been directed to complete the membership campaign at union council level by July 15, complete union council organization by July 31 and complete district and Tehsil organization by August 14. The PML-N chief has also directed them to organize workers convention in every district between June 15 and August 14. “The district office- bearers who will fail to achieve the targets will be replaced,” Mr Sharif warned.
Meanwhile, Mr Sharif has asked additional general secretary Chaudhry Jaffar Iqbal to coordinate and supervise organization of wings in centre and provinces.
