Halal or Haram?

During one conversation, a friend told me that she was concerned about the enzymes contained in certain varieties of Cheetos might be derived from the pork. She called the company and confirmed that the enzymes were derived from the pork. However, a Sheikh from the local masjid gave a fatwa that Cheetos were halal even though the enzymes were derived from the pork. Surprised? Well, according to the Sheik, even though the enzymes were from the pork, they had lost their original form due to the “heavy process”.
I found it rather interesting about the comments the Sheikh made about the enzymes – “heavy process”.
Toxic chemical ingredients
Yes, the Sheikh is right, but the enzymes are not the only ingredient heavily processed; the entire Cheetos (or any packaged foods and snacks) are heavily processed and loaded with chemicals such as Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), artificial colors, artificial flavor and others that are responsible for obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, ADHD, and many kinds of cancer.
Partially hydrogenated oil is also commonly seen in the packaged foods and snacks. What is it so bad about this partially hydrogenated oil? According to Richard Stacel, partially hydrogenated/hydrogenated oils are responsible for thickening your blood.
Hydrogenated oils are oils that are often healthy in their natural state, but are quickly turned into poisons through the manufacturing and processing they undergo. They take these naturally healthy oils such as palm, kernel, soybean, corn oil or coconut oil and they heat it anywhere from five hundred to one thousand degrees under several atmospheres of pressure.
They then inject a catalyst into the oil for several hours. The catalyst is typically a metal such as nickel, platinum or even aluminum. As this bubbles up into the oil the molecular structure changes and increases in density and rearranges it’s molecules so that instead of a liquid at room temperature we now have either semi-solid or solid oil. This creates either partially hydrogenated or fully hydrogenated oils.
The molecules in this new product are now closer to cellulose or plastic than to oil. In fact hydrogenated oil is only one molecule away from being plastic. When you eat anything containing this material, just as the oil is now thicker and more viscous (dense), so too does your blood become thicker and more viscous right along with it. The heart now has to work so much harder to pump blood throughout the system. This is one of the major ways that consuming hydrogenated oils contributes to high blood pressure.

It’s haram even if it’s halal
By including all these toxic and carcinogenic ingredients, I wouldn’t consider Cheetos or any packaged foods and snacks as “foods”. So what is the point of arguing halal or haram? Would you feed yourself poison and at the same time insist the poison be halal? From what I understand, if the food I consume could harm my body, the food becomes haram to me instantly regardless of halal or haram in the first place because my body also has the right over me. By knowingly feeding our bodies with toxic and harmful “foods”, won’t we be held accountable on the day of the judgment?
Raw and fresh fruits and vegetables

Allah talks about fresh fruits and vegetables repeatedly in the Quran: Allah describes the Garden (Heaven) full of fruits and vegetables. When Allah the Almighty swears, He swears by fruits (such as figs). Allah shows his bounties to mankind by mentioning fruits (grapes, for example).
The evidence is clear that fresh fruits and vegetables are the foods created for us to consume. Modern science discovers that fruits contain various vitamins and antioxidants while the greens are full of minerals, vitamins and even amino acids (used for our bodies to produce protein). By consuming large amount of fruits and greens with some raw nuts and seeds (for essential fatty acids), one gets a complete health profile without any side effects.
I would certainly not doubt the health benefits I could get from the fresh fruits and greens because I have all the faith in Allah the Almighty’s wisdom. What about you?
